Jack Smith did NOT endorse Tonia Uranga for 7th District Council

On Thursday (5/13) I received a mailer from the campaign of Tonia Reyes Uranga for 7th District City Council listing me as an endorsement.  I was surprised and disappointed.  I have NOT made any such endorsement.  I have, to this point, chosen to remain neutral in the contest between Tonia and James Johnson.

After the April 13 primary election, I had very good, frank conversations with both James and Tonia.  At the end of April, I personally told both that I would remain neutral in the run-off race.  I have not endorsed either candidate.  The press even reported my neutrality.

I have spoken to both candidates about this incorrect and misleading mailer.  I assured James that my position of neutrality is unchanged.

I expressed my unhappiness and dispapointment to Tonia.  She appologized for the mistake.  She assured me that when my name comes up, she will make it clear that I have not endorsed either candidate.  I accept her apology and trust the mistake will not be repeated.

I encourage everyone to learn about both candidates, then vote.

Thanks to all of you for your ongoing support.

Jack

Jack Smith Filing His Candidate Papers

My candidacy for City Council is now official.  I am running in the 7th District.

Today (Thursday, 1/7) I received a letter from the Long Beach City Clerk that says :
"You are hereby notified that your nomination documents filed with this office on January 4, 2010 are sufficient to qualify you as a candidate for the Office of Member of the City Council, District No. 7 on the ballot for the City of Long Beach Primary Nominating Election to be held on April 13, 2010."

I am pleased and looking forward to the upcoming campaign.

In the paperwork I signed, I accepted campaign spending limits of $40,000 for this election.  That qualifies me for matching funds.  The first $100 of each contribution counts towards the qualifying minimum amount of $5,000.  So, I need at least 50 people to each donate $100 or more (up to $350 if you can).  If you've already donated $100 or more, we're covered (and thank you).  If there's more than one person in your household and you'd like to contribute a couple of hundred dollars, do it in 2 separate checks of at least $100 with separate contribution forms.

Pass the word to everyone you know and ask them to contribute.  I need you all to help me raise this money towards the $40,000 goal.  One of my opponents has considerably more than $50,000 (he, then, won't agree to the campaign limits).  So, I will need the full $40,000 and some really creative campaigning.  $ and suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks for all your support and please enlist everyone you know into the effort.
